More than 70 buses are ready in the besieged city of Sumy in northeastern Ukraine to evacuate civilians who have gathered before a “safe passage” operation that the Red Cross hopes to launch today, a spokesman said.
“People have gathered, we hope it will go as planned,” Watson, a spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), told Reuters in Geneva. “At least we hope to start this business today.”
Earlier, Watson told a United Nations briefing in Geneva that the ICRC and the Ukrainian Red Cross hoped to organize the evacuation of two convoys of about 30 buses to a safe area.
