The number of people who fled to Poland from Ukraine to escape the war today at 10:00 Greek time exceeded two million, announced the Polish border guards.
If this number is compared to the official tally of all Ukrainian refugees, it means that two out of three refugees have entered Poland. But many of them want to continue their journey to Western Europe or Canada.
“Today, March 18, at 09:00 (local time) the number of refugees from Ukraine exceeded two million. Most of them are women with children. The border guards are the first Poles to help them after crossing the border.” the service pointed out in a short announcement on Twitter.
In recent days, the Polish authorities have noticed a slight drop in the number of new refugees.
A total of more than 3.1 million people have fled Ukraine since the Russian invasion on February 24, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), released on Thursday.
Most of the refugees are Ukrainian citizens, but about 162,000 citizens of other countries have also left Ukraine, the International Organization for Migration said on Wednesday.
At the same time, the UN has counted about two million displaced people inside Ukraine.
Polish society has warmly welcomed Ukrainian refugees. From Wednesday, Ukrainians can be officially registered in the communities where they live in order to have access to health services and school education for their children.
