Ukraine: MP wanted for high treason

Oleksii Kovalev, a member of the Ukrainian parliament, is wanted for high treason, as an investigation by the Ukrainian authorities revealed that he has been named vice-chairman of the council that took over the government of the Kherson region occupied by Russian troops, the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office announced yesterday.

Mr Kovalyov, who reportedly survived an assassination attempt last month, reportedly organized by Ukrainian intelligence, faces life in prison if caught.

His appointment to the new self-governing council of Kherson was announced on Monday.

Mr. Kovalyov was elected to the Ukrainian Parliament in 2019, with President Volodymyr Zelensky’s Servant of the People party.

But he was expelled from the ranks of the party and from KO at the end of April after being accused of collaborating with Russia. Igor Kovalev returned to his special homeland, the city of Gola Pristan, in April.

The Russian army has occupied almost all of Kherson.
