Ukraine: Navigation in the Sea of Azov is now open

Russia has lifted previously announced restrictions on the passage of ships in the Sea of Azov linked to Navy high schools in the region, the Ukrainian port authority said today.

“The movement of ships with recommended routes to the Ukrainian seaports in the Sea of Azov is open,” the authority said in a statement.

Ukraine, one of the world’s leading exporters of steel, grain and sunflower oil, exports through ports in the Black Sea and Azov – Odessa, Pivden, Tsornomorsk, Kherson, Mariupol and Berdyansk.

Ukrainian officials have criticized Russian naval high schools off the coast of Ukraine, saying the presence of warships is part of a “hybrid war” that makes it virtually impossible to navigate the Black Sea and the Azov Sea.

The Ukrainian port authority said this week that navigation restrictions would run from 13 February to 19 February and that “ship traffic … to Ukrainian ports in the Sea of Azov would be suspended for the duration of these activities”.

Ukrainian grain traders said today that the Russian Navy’s gymnasiums and the closure of traditional traditional roads have so far not affected the Ukrainian grain export market.

Moscow is conducting naval exercises in the Black Sea this month, while conducting ground exercises in northern Ukraine, in Belarus, in a show of strength that the West says could be a precursor to an invasion. Moscow denies planning to attack its neighbor.
