Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday that Ukraine is not eager to talk to Russian Vladimir Putin but needs to face the reality that doing so is likely to be necessary to end the war.
“There are things to discuss with the Russian leader. I’m not saying that our people are eager to talk to him, but we have to face the reality of what we’re experiencing,” Zelensky said in a speech to an Indonesian think tank.
“What we want from this reunion is our lives back. We want to regain the life of a sovereign country within its own territory,” he said, adding that Russia still does not seem ready for peace talks.
The Kremlin accuses the Ukrainians of freezing negotiations and making contradictory statements.
“In general, Ukraine’s leadership constantly makes statements that contradict each other. This does not allow us to fully understand what the Ukrainian side wants,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on a regular conference call on Friday.
On Thursday, Peskov said Moscow hopes Kiev will accept the status quo and meet its territorial demands, following comments by former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger that appeared to suggest Ukraine has to agree to cede Crimea and great part of the Donbass region to Russia.
