“No city” in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine is “safe” for its inhabitants, as fighting between Ukrainians and the Russian army is “very violent,” regional governor Pavlo Kirilenko warned today.
“There is no safe place, no safe city in the Donetsk region,” Kirilenko told AFP in an interview. It is “extremely dangerous for residents to stay there” at a time when Russian pressure is mounting around the cities of Lisichansk and Severodonetsk, he added.
“The situation in the area remains difficult,” the governor said, adding that “the enemy is trying to focus its efforts” mainly “on the Bakhmut-Lisitshansk road, where it is particularly dangerous to move.
The command of the Ukrainian armed forces “is doing everything possible” so that the Ukrainian soldiers are not surrounded by the Russian army in the last pocket of resistance that remains under Ukrainian control, around Lisitshansk and Sheverodonetsk, Kirilenko said. “The main mission is to stop the advance of the enemy towards Sloviansk and Kramatorsk,” two of the most important cities in the region, he continued.
The governor assured that although fierce fighting is raging, the evacuations continue and 251 people were evacuated safely on Wednesday.
“There are 45,000 inhabitants in Kramatorsk,” a city a few dozen kilometers from the front line, he said. He also reminded that food deliveries continue in the Donetsk region, but the electricity, water supply and gas supply have been cut off.
