The Ukrainian authorities today ordered eight settlements in the Sumi region that are near the border with the Russian region Kursk, where in recent days the Moscow troops have forced Ukrainian forces to retreat. “Due to the deterioration of the operational situation in the area and the constant bombings, it was decided today (…) the mandatory evacuation of eight settlements” in the Ukrainian region of Sumi, according to a Facebook military administration post. Ukrainian forces were unexpectedly invaded last August in the Russian region of Kursk, occupying a part of it. Kiev believed that Moscow would mobilize soldiers from the Eastern Ukraine front, also hoping that it might have acquired a strong negotiating trump in future peace talks.
