Ukraine: Parliament approves the removal of the head of the Internal Security Service and the Prosecutor General

The Ukrainian parliament today approved the removal of the head of the internal security service SBU and the prosecutor general, proposed by President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“Parliament has voted to terminate the duties of Irina Venediktova as Attorney General,” MP David Arahamia wrote on the Telegram app. Many other deputies also announced the removal of SBU chief Ivan Bakanov.

The impeachment of Bakanov, a childhood friend of the president, was approved by 265 MPs against a minimum of 226 required, and that of Venediktova by 264 MPs, MPs Oleksiy Goncharenko and Yaroslav Zheleznyak wrote on their channels on the Telegram app.

The replacement of the two officials was announced on Sunday night by the head of state, who accused them of insufficient efforts in the fight against Russian spies and collaborators of Moscow.

Yesterday, Monday, Zelensky also announced a “revision of personnel” within the SBU as at least three high-ranking officials of the agency are suspected of high treason in recent months.

“The whole world expected” from the dismissed “more tangible results” in the “liquidation of collaborators and traitors” who interfered in the structures of the agency, the deputy head of the presidential administration, Andrii Smirnov, said yesterday.

Meanwhile, Parliament announced today that an experienced investigator has been chosen to head the anti-corruption prosecutor’s office, pending approval of his appointment by the country’s attorney general.

In a statement it said that Oleksandr Klimenko was selected by a special competition committee in a process that lasted several months. Klimenko previously worked for the national anti-corruption office, another state anti-corruption body.

Progress in the fight against corruption, including the appointment of an anti-corruption prosecutor, is one of Kiev’s long-term commitments to its Western partners. The former head of the anti-corruption prosecutor’s office resigned almost two years ago.

Kiev’s need for economic, political and military support has increased sharply since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.

“There is only one more step left before his appointment. This decision must be signed by the attorney general,” the House statement said.

It is unclear how quickly Ukraine will be able to complete the process as President Volodymyr Zelensky fired Prosecutor General Irina Venediktova.
