The Polish government announced today that it has asked NATO to activate Article 4 of the Alliance treaty, which provides for consultations in the event of a threat to the security of one of the parties, following the Russian attack on Ukraine.
“The Polish ambassador in Brussels made such a request to the NATO secretary general, with a group of allies,” said Polish government spokesman Peter Miller.
Polish President Andrei Duda convened a meeting this morning of the government, military commanders and heads of various public services of this NATO country, which borders Ukraine.
In the meantime, NATO announced on Thursday that it will take new deterrent and defensive measures after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as more than 100 warplanes are on high alert and the alliance will further increase the presence of troops on its eastern side, according to Reuters.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has said that a special digital summit of the alliance’s 30 members will be held on Friday, attended by the leaders of Sweden, Finland and the institutions of the European Union.
Ukraine is not a member of the alliance, and Stoltenberg said there were no NATO troops in the country.
“We do not plan to send NATO troops to Ukraine. What we are doing is defensive,” he said.
