Ukraine: Poland prepares hospital beds and special train to transport injured Ukrainians

Poland is preparing a train with special medical equipment to transport Ukrainians injured in Russia’s attack on the neighboring country, the Polish Ministry of Health announced today, adding that Polish hospitals are ready to receive thousands of patients.

“Poland is preparing to receive migrants from Ukraine, including Ukrainian citizens affected by the armed conflict,” the health ministry said in an email to Reuters.

In Ukraine, explosions were heard before dawn and throughout the morning in the capital Kiev, a city of 3 million people. The highway leading out of the city was congested as residents left the capital while the sound of fire and sirens was heard.

“We will do everything possible to ensure that every person entering the territory of Poland has access to health care, including medical care. Hospital beds are being set up to receive the injured,” the Polish ministry said.

Polish Health Minister Adam Nijelsky said that Poland had prepared a list of 120 hospitals for the treatment of people injured in the conflict in Ukraine.

“Overall, we estimate at this time that it is possible to receive several thousand injured patients as a result of the hostilities, including those who have been seriously injured,” Nidzelski said in an interview with wp.pl.

He also said that Poland is preparing a special train to transport the injured, with medical equipment and specialized personnel, something that has never been used in the country before.

“Exercises are planned for its use in the coming days. It will pick up the wounded from the border with Ukraine,” the minister said.

Nijelksi also said that Poland was considering using campaign hospitals set up for COVID patients.

“Campaign hospitals and their future role are being considered. There are currently fewer and fewer patients with COVID-19, so they could be used if the most pessimistic scenarios become a reality.”
