The Russian-backed self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic in eastern Ukraine could soon hold a referendum on joining Russia, local leader Leonid Pasetsnik said on Sunday, according to the rebel news agency Reuters.
“I think in the near future a referendum will be held in the territory of democracy,” Pasetsnik said. “The people will exercise their absolute constitutional right and express their opinion on its accession to the Russian Federation.”
Russia last month recognized the self-proclaimed republics of Luhansk and Donetsk as independent and later ordered what it called a peace operation in the region.
On February 24, Russia sent tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine in a “special operation,” as it called it, to “demilitarize” and “de-Nazify” its neighbor.
Ukrainian forces put up strong resistance and the West imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia in a bid to force it to withdraw its forces.
