The pro-Russian separatists paraded in Mariupol today carrying a huge ribbon of St. George, the Russian symbol of patriotism, as part of the celebrations for the victory of the former USSR over Nazi Germany in 1945.
This ribbon, in black and orange, has been worn by millions of Russians since the early 2000s to honor Soviet soldiers killed in World War II.
Today in the devastated Mariupol, the pro-Russians, led by their separatist leader, Dennis Pushilin, paraded in the streets holding a 300-meter-long ribbon, according to his post in the Telegram. In a photo accompanying the post, Pusilin is seen smiling, holding the ribbon with other people, whom he writes are residents of the city.
Pushilin also wears a small Z-shaped ribbon of St. George, the letter that became a symbol of war and was written on Russian armor. “Together with the residents of Mariupol today, Victory Day, we carried a huge ribbon of Agios Georgios, 300 meters long,” he wrote in the post.
Mariupol is almost completely under the control of Russian forces who are still resisting at the Azovstal steel plant, the last enclave of the city’s Ukrainian defenders.
