Ukraine has proposed to Russia that seriously injured defenders at the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol be exchanged for Russian prisoners of war, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said on Wednesday.
In an online post, Vereshchuk stated that “there is still no agreement. Negotiations continue.”
After Mariupol was continuously bombed for weeks, the Azovstal steelworks became the city’s last stronghold under Ukrainian control.
As attacks on the plant intensified, hundreds of civilians ended up trapped there, hiding in underground tunnels and with restricted access to basic supplies.
Faced with the situation, Ukraine has carried out some joint missions with the United Nations (UN) to evacuate groups of civilians from the area.
On Saturday (7), the Ukrainian deputy prime minister said that all women, children and elderly people had been rescued.
So far, however, no mission has been carried out to remove fighters trapped in the steel mill.
