The Russian announcement of a ceasefire in Ukraine during the Orthodox Christmas, celebrated on January 6 and 8, was rejected by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
In the assessment of International Relations professor at the University of Sergipe Barbara Motta, “any acceptance of a ceasefire can be seen as weakness or even subservience.”
“The refusal not only has a symbolic act of demonstrating strength in front of Vladimir Putin, but it is symbolic of Ukraine’s withdrawal from Eastern European cultural elements,” he explained.
The specialist recalls that the Orthodox faith is one of these elements and that one of the triggers for the conflict was precisely the Ukrainian approach to the West.
Barbara points out that the current moment of the war is one of stagnation, “what we see today is a war of attrition, with small advances on both sides and little prospect of an end.”
According to the professor, “if Ukraine survives the winter, it will have better conditions for something to change in the theater of operations, to tip the scales to one side”.
