Ukraine’s border guards have dismissed Belarus’ claims that it is reinforcing troops on their mutual border, describing the reports as an information operation by Minsk with Moscow’s support.
Belarus, a close ally of Russia that has provided support for Moscow’s war in Ukraine, said last week that Kiev was reinforcing its forces along the border.
The Kremlin said on Monday the information was cause for concern.
“This is not the first time that Belarus has offered information about Ukraine posing a threat,” border guard spokesman Andriy Demchenko told Ukrainian TV.
“This is another part of the information operation conducted by Belarus with the support of Russia.”
He said the border remained a concern and Ukraine was strengthening it with engineering, while maintaining the necessary number of troops to prevent any provocation.
He also said that Belarus has been holding military exercises since June 21 and that blaming Ukraine for border frictions could be in line with those exercises.
On Sunday, the Belarusian Defense Ministry said it had information showing that Ukraine was moving troops, weapons and military equipment to the border, in particular to the Zhytomyr region.
Minsk also said its own forces had deployed additional air defenses to protect the border area from drones, after claiming to have shot down a Ukrainian quadcopter earlier last week.
