The Ukrainian military this week released a video showing the use of a “kamikaze drone” in action in the conflict with Russia.
In the footage, shared by Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) heads towards a Russian tank, hitting the tank and the soldiers sitting on top of it.
The nickname “kamikaze” comes from this self-destruct action performed by the drone against a target, and refers to the pilots of Japanese planes loaded with explosives whose mission was to carry out suicide attacks against Allied ships in the final stages of World War II.
“The modern kamikaze drone equipped with powerful explosives flies directly towards the tank, causing irreparable losses to the adversary,” the Ukrainian military wrote.
The action is filmed by the UAV’s own camera, remotely controlled by Ukrainian forces. According to the Ukrainians, the video model was donated by international allies. “It is a good example of positive results through the help of foreign partners”, they said.
