Russian forces launched a ground attack on Friday near Ukraine's second-largest city, Kharkiv, in the northeast of the country, and made small incursions.
Thus, fighting has intensified on a different front, as the war is largely being fought in the east and south.
Ukraine sent reinforcements to the region, the Defense Ministry said, adding that Russia attacked Vovchansk with guided aerial bombs and artillery.
