Ukraine: Residents flee Kiev after Putin’s announcement

The general air and ground attack of the Russian forces on targets of Ukraine is in full swing. Explosions have been reported in Kiev, Kharkiv, Mariupol and Odessa.

Residents of Kiev, in fact, have begun to leave the city as if with their cars, as seen in videos that were transmitted through social media. Russian forces are attacking the airport in the Ukrainian capital and according to Reuters it is being evacuated.

Mariupol, a city with a strategic port in eastern Ukraine, came under “amphibious” attack shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced he had approved a military operation, AFP reports. It is the largest city on the front line, with half a million inhabitants. It should be noted, however, that in Mariupol there is a strong Greek minority.
