The Russian army is gathering forces ahead of an attack in the eastern Ukrainian city of Slovyansk, the Ukrainian general staff has warned.
According to the Ukrainian generals, there are up to 20 battle formations of the Russian army in the area, with motorized infantry, artillery and air defense systems, which have from 600 to 800 soldiers each.
Administratively, the city of Slovyansk belongs to the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. Russia has a stated goal of occupying all of eastern Ukraine, the so-called Donbas region, in the war that has now entered its 101st day.
This city is located near Sheverodonetsk, where fierce hostilities have been raging for several days. The Russian military and pro-Russian separatists say Severodonyevsk has fallen almost entirely into their hands, but the Ukrainian side assured yesterday that it had recovered a fifth of the provisional capital of the Luhansk region, despite heavy artillery shelling by Russian artillery.
