Ukraine: Russian Ministry of Defense says warplane hit Ukrainian soldiers in Fidonisi

The Russian Defense Ministry announced today that a Russian warplane struck the Ukrainian Black Sea island of Fidonisi overnight, shortly after the Ukrainian military announced that the Ukrainian flag had been raised again on the island.

Andriy Yermak, the Ukrainian president’s chief of staff, posted a video on Telegram today showing three soldiers raising a large Ukrainian flag on the island from which Russian forces withdrew on June 30 after coming under heavy artillery and missile fire from Ukrainian forces.

In the daily announcement of the Russian Defense Ministry, its spokesman, Lt. Gen. Igor Konashenkov, said that part of the Ukrainian platoon on the island was “neutralized.”

“At about 5 am, many Ukrainian military personnel who were on a speedboat landed on the island and took photos with the flag. An aircraft of the Russian forces immediately launched an attack with high-precision missiles on Fidonisi, as a result of which part of the Ukrainian army was neutralized,” he noted. .

This small island is important because of its proximity to the sea lanes to the Ukrainian port of Odessa.

Russia says it withdrew its forces from the island last week as a “goodwill gesture” to show it is not blocking United Nations efforts to open a humanitarian corridor to allow grain to be flown into Ukraine.
