Some Russian troops deployed near the border with Ukraine have begun returning to their barracks, the Russian Defense Ministry said today, as the West worries that a Russian military operation against Ukraine is imminent.
“The units of the southern and western military areas, after completing their training, have already begun (…) to return to their barracks,” said Igor Konachenkov, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense.
This announcement is the first sign of Moscow’s retreat into the crisis with the West that began in late 2021.
Russia has been mobilizing more than 100,000 troops since December on the border with Ukraine, raising fears in Kiev of an impending invasion. Moscow denies this scenario, but seeks assurances of its security, such as a pledge that Ukraine will never join NATO, which the West rejects.
Russia is currently conducting joint military exercises with Belarus, which are expected to be completed on February 20.
