Ukraine: Russian TV broadcasts now broadcast throughout occupied Kherson region

The Russian military announced today that it had connected the entire Kherson region with Russian television stations, which will now have “free” access to this Moscow-occupied part of southern Ukraine.

“Specialists from the Russian Armed Forces’ transmission units have connected the last of the seven television transponders in the Kherson region with Russian television stations,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The same source clarified that about one million residents of this region now have “free” access to the main Russian stations, especially those of the public radio and television VGTRK, which rebroadcasts the Kremlin line.

The Kherson region, which borders the annexed Crimean peninsula, has been occupied by the Russian army since the first days of its offensive against Ukraine, which was launched in late February.

Since then, Moscow has pursued a policy of alienating the territories it has placed under its control in southern Ukraine: the Russian currency, the ruble, is now circulating there, and Russian passports have begun to be distributed.

Today, one of the new pro-Russian officials in the Kherson region, Kirill Stremousov, said that the territory could be united with Russia “before the end of the year”.

“We will hold a referendum this year. And after this referendum, we will turn to the leaders of the Russian Federation to receive us into Russia,” Stremusov was quoted as saying by Russia’s state-run TASS news agency.
