Ukraine: Russians hold British man hostage in Ukrainian army

A British member of the Ukrainian army has been taken prisoner by the Russians, with his mother asking The Daily Telegraph to treat him “with humanity” and set him free.

Russian state television broadcast images Thursday evening of a young man in handcuffs and a wound on the forehead, saying it was Eden Aslin.

Anj Wood’s mother confirmed to the Telegraph, which has devoted many articles to the 28-year-old even before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, that it’s her son, who also has a distinctive tattoo.

“Eden is an active member of the Ukrainian armed forces and therefore a prisoner of war,” she said.

“It looks like he has already been beaten. It is time for the British government to act to secure Eden’s release,” he said.

In a message posted in consultation with his family on social media run by his relatives, who are hoping for an exchange of prisoners, the young man explained on Tuesday that for 48 days “we tried to do everything we could to defend Mariupol. “But we had no choice but to surrender to the Russian forces.”

“We did not have food and ammunition (…) I hope this war ends quickly,” he added.

According to the Telegraph, Eden Aslin had joined the Ukrainian Marines in 2018 and had bought a house in Ukraine, wanting to start a family with his fiancée.

Before fighting in Ukraine, Aslin was 21 years old when he joined the People’s Protection Units (YPG), the Kurdish militia fighting the Islamic State in Syria.
