Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk said on Tuesday (2) that the military carried out a “destructive strike” on a Russian ammunition depot in Moscow-occupied Crimea on Monday (1).
“Once again, Ukrainian aircraft ‘destroyed’ by enemy propaganda continue to successfully carry out combat missions,” Oleshchuk said on Telegram. The military official referred in the message to a report by the Russian Defense Ministry that five Ukrainian military jets were destroyed at an airfield in the Poltava region.
Oleshchuk did not specify the exact location, but posted a video from a local Ukraine-linked Telegram channel, Krymskiy Veter, purportedly showing the attack in Balaklava, near Sevastopol.
Reuters was not immediately able to verify the statement or the video.
Russian-appointed Sevastopol Governor Mihail Razvozhaev said on Monday that air forces had destroyed five Ukrainian targets in the Black Sea and Balaklava district. He did not mention extensive damage, except for small fires in a forest and damaged cars.
Over the past two years of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine has carried out several air and naval strikes against Russian targets in Crimea and caused significant damage to Moscow’s Black Sea fleet.
Ukraine has also recently stepped up attacks on Russian air defense systems on the peninsula.
