The capture of Russian soldiers on Wednesday (14) was the largest arrest made by Kiev against Moscow forces at one time, a source in Ukraine’s security service (SBU) told CNN .
“The SBU special forces captured 102 Russian soldiers. This is the most massive capture of the enemy that has ever been carried out in one go,” the SBU source told CNN .

The source went on to say that the Russian soldiers who were captured were in a “well-fortified stronghold” where there were underground communications and accommodation for staff, a canteen and an armory.
The SBU said the captured soldiers were part of the Russian 488th Motorized Rifle Regiment brigade and the Akhmat unit.
THE CNN could not independently verify the total number of prisoners.
A video from the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency on Wednesday at the border crossing between Ukraine’s Sumy region and Kursk showed a Ukrainian truck carrying blindfolded men in Russian military uniforms traveling away from Russia.
THE CNN contacted the Ukrainian military for comment on the video.
On August 6, Ukraine launched its surprise offensive and so far claims to control more than 1,000 km² of Russian territory.
A source told Reuters that the captured Russian servicemen would eventually be exchanged for Ukrainian prisoners of war.
Ukraine’s human rights commissioner, Dmytro Lubinets, said this week that he had spoken with his Russian counterpart about a prisoner swap.
Prisoner of war exchanges between Ukraine and Russia take place regularly – the latest took place last month.
Thus, Ukrainian authorities said that Kiev has already secured the return of 3,405 people from Russian captivity since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022.
