Ukraine has a laser weapon capable of shooting down aerial targets at an altitude of more than 2 km, the commander of the country’s drone forces said on Monday (16).
Military officer Vadym Sukharevskyi did not provide details when talking about the weapon. Reuters was unable to verify the statement.
“Today we can shoot down aircraft at an altitude of more than 2 km with this laser,” he said, according to the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.
According to Sukharevskyi, the laser was named Tryzub, a Ukrainian word meaning “trident”, a symbol used in the national coat of arms, suggesting that it was produced domestically.
In April, former British Defense Minister Grant Shapps said the UK’s DragonFire laser, expected to enter service in 2027, could be used in Ukraine to combat Russian drones.
