Ukraine says it is dealing with 5,600 war crimes cases

Ukraine has begun prosecuting some 5,600 war crimes cases linked to the Russian invasion, Attorney General Irina Venediktova told Britain’s Sky News, according to Bloomberg. The suspects in the main “anchor case” alone include more than 500 top Russian military, political and other officials, she said.

“Almost every region of Ukraine has been bombed and we have a lot of specific data in every region and every city,” Venediktova said. The Kremlin denies targeting civilians and has accused Ukraine of killing thousands of its own people, without providing evidence despite satellite images, intercepted communications, eyewitness accounts and other reports suggesting its troops were responsible.

Venediktova said Vladimir Putin was “the main war criminal of the 21st century”, but as long as he remains Russian president he cannot be charged under international law without a decision by the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.
