Kyiv will be ready if Belarus’s armed forces take part in the war on Russia’s side in Ukraine, a Ukrainian official said on Wednesday, according to Reuters.
Belarus, a close ally of Russia, said Wednesday that its military had launched large-scale exercises to test its combat readiness and that it was not a threat to Ukraine.
“We do not rule out that Russia could at some point use Belarus territory and the country’s armed forces against Ukraine,” said Andriy Demchenko, a spokesman for Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service.
“So we are ready,” he said, adding that the border with Belarus had been strengthened since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.
Areas of Ukraine adjacent to Belarus came under Russian attack in the early stages of the invasion, but Russian attacks are now concentrated in the eastern and southeastern regions of Ukraine.
Demchenko said Ukraine had also strengthened its border with the Russian-backed region of Transnistria, where tensions have been rising since local authorities said it was under attack.
Ukrainian officials have expressed concern about the situation in Transnistria and condemned Russia’s efforts to drag the region into Russia’s war with Ukraine. Moscow has also expressed concern and said it is closely monitoring the situation in Transnistria.
