Ukraine says Russia has lost more than 200,000 troops since the start of the invasion

About 208,000 Russian troops have been killed since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine began, a spokesman for the Eastern Group of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said.

Spokesman Serhii Cherevatyi noted that this was more than the approximately 170,000 Russian forces he says were involved in the initial invasion in 2022.

A CNN was unable to independently confirm these figures.

Estimates of Russian losses have varied across different sources, with the Biden administration saying in May that Russia has suffered more than 100,000 casualties – i.e. dead and wounded – since December.

The Kremlin rejected that number at the time, with a spokesman saying the US “has absolutely no way of providing correct numbers”.

The Russian Defense Ministry has not released updates on its casualties since last September, when Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said fewer than 6,000 Russian troops had been killed.
