Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday that a Russian attack prevented the evacuation of civilians from Kiev, Mariupol, Sumy, Kharkiv, Volnovakha and Mykolayiv. Russia’s onslaught also did not allow aid to arrive in these cities.
“This prevents the safe passage of humanitarian columns carrying Ukrainian and foreign citizens, as well as the delivery of medicine and food,” it said in a statement from the Ukrainian body.
The ministry urged foreign leaders to force Russia into a ceasefire to avert what could be a humanitarian catastrophe. On Saturday, the Russian Defense Ministry announced a ceasefire in the Ukrainian cities of Mariupol and Volnovakha to allow civilians to leave through humanitarian corridors.
However, both Saturday and Sunday, attacks attributed by Ukraine to Russia frustrated the withdrawal of populations from the cities of Mariupol and Volnovakha, which would form these corridors.
The opening of humanitarian corridors has been a constant request of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky. The Ukrainians, however, claim that the Russians are trying to manipulate the refugees’ departure so that the destination is Belarus or Russia itself.
Over the weekend, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that “Russian forces were attacked after establishing humanitarian corridors” and accused “Ukrainian nationalists” of preventing the evacuation of civilians.
