LAST UPDATE: 15:00
Ukraine has launched a long-awaited counteroffensive in the country’s south, the southern military command said on Monday, Reuters reported.
“Today we launched offensive actions in various directions, including in the Kherson region,” Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne quoted southern command spokeswoman Natalya Khumenyuk as saying. She confirmed the news a few minutes later in an update.
Ukraine has been discussing a planned counterattack in its Russian-held southern regions for two months.
Humenyuk said recent Ukrainian strikes on Russia’s southern supply routes had “undoubtedly weakened the enemy”, adding that more than 10 Russian ammunition depots had been hit in the past week.
However, he declined to go into further detail about the new attack.
“Every military operation needs silence,” he said, adding that Russian forces in the south are “quite strong” and have been built up for a long time.
The southern military command of Ukraine has issued a call to citizens who are in the areas where they are at risk due to the hostilities to move away from them.
