Ukraine: seven humanitarian corridors opened, but still no Mariupol

Agreement was reached on the establishment of seven humanitarian corridors to evacuate civilians from Ukrainian cities and towns this Thursday (24)said Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Iryna Vereshchuk.

But, she said, civilians trying to leave the besieged city of Mariupol will find transport in neighboring Berdyansk — making it clear that Russia has not allowed a safe corridor to be created to or from the southern port city’s center.

The same situation occurred on Monday (21), when eight passages were agreed for civilians, but an exit from Mariupol remained impossible.

Vereshchuk said on Tuesday that at least 100,000 civilians wanted to flee Mariupol, in southern Ukraine, but were unable to do so due to a lack of safe corridors out of the besieged port city.

The Russian attacks led to a complete breakdown in basic services – with residents without access to gas, electricity or water. Bodies are being dumped on the street because either there is no one to pick them up, or it’s just too dangerous to try.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the city “is being reduced to ashes” but that it “will survive.” A Ukrainian official said the city is still under heavy Russian bombardment: “bombs fall every 10 minutes.”
