A first ship loaded with 7,000 tons of grain and protected by the Russian Navy sailed from the Ukrainian port of Berdyanskwhich has been occupied by Russia, the new authorities of the city appointed by Moscow announced today, broadcasts the Athens News Agency.

“The first merchant ship, after months, sailed from the commercial port of Berdyansk, 7,000 tons of cereals departing for friendly countries,” the head of the pro-Russian administration of the region, Evgeny Balitsky, told the Telegram. “The safety of the cargo ship is ensured by the warships and speedboats of the naval base of the Black Sea Fleet in Novorossiysk,” he added.

Ukraine has been accusing Russia for weeks of stealing Ukrainian wheat crops in regions occupied by the Russian military in southern Ukraine to sell them illegally on the international market. Moscow denies any theft.

Berdyansk, a port on the Sea of Azov, has been occupied intact by the Russian army since the beginning of the Russian offensive. It is located in the region of Zaporizhia, which has been occupied for the most part by Russia, as well as the neighboring region of Kherson.

Moscow has appointed in the regions of Kherson and Zaporizhia “military and political administrations”, as it calls them, which organize the expropriation of these zones. These appointed authorities say they are preparing the annexation of these territories by Russia, as was done in 2014 with the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea.
