Ukraine: South Korean fighter to stand trial after capture in eastern Ukraine

A captured South Korean fighter will be tried in the self-proclaimed Russian-backed Donetsk People’s Republic, Interfax news agency reported, citing separatist official Natalia Nikon.

“A decision is now being prepared for a mercenary from South Korea. He is a citizen of the said country who was fighting for the Ukrainian armed forces,” Interfax quoted Nikonorova as saying today. She did not reveal the name of the fighter.

Two Britons and a Moroccan were captured while fighting for Ukraine and sentenced to death by a court in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic on Thursday.

The family of a British mercenary sentenced to death has demanded his release

The family of Britain’s Sean Piner, who was sentenced to death by the Russian-backed Donbass authorities, has spoken of the devastating news of his death sentence and demanded his exchange or release.

Two Britons, Piner and Aydin Aslin, were convicted of mercenary actions by a court on Thursday in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, which is not internationally recognized.

Piner’s family said the process was an “illegal show,” and that Piner needed access to independent legal advice.
