Like today in 1986 the most famous nuclear accident in the history of mankind took place in Chernobyl. Of Ukraine (then Soviet Union). An explosion and fire at the plant’s reactor No. 4 leads to an incident of the highest magnitude of nuclear accidents, with dozens of deaths directly related to it and many more of the radioactivity released.
The Soviet Union knew that its nuclear plant Chernobyl was dangerous and covered up other emergencies that occurred there before the disaster 35 years ago, according to declassified documents released on Net Monday (26/04) by the Ukrainian authorities, on the occasion of the anniversary of the nuclear accident.
After a failed safety test at the plant’s fourth reactor, clouds of radioactive material from Chernobyl covered much of Europe, in the worst nuclear disaster ever.
According to the Ukrainian Security Service, the SBU, there were other “emergencies” in the unit in 1984. “In 1983 the Moscow leadership was informed that the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was one of the most dangerous in the USSR, due to of the lack of security equipment “, is added in the announcement, as conveyed by ΑΠΕ-ΜΠΕ.
When a French journalist collected water and soil samples from the Chernobyl area in 1987, after the accident, the KGB changed them with others, in a special operation it organized, always according to the SBU citing a report by the USSR State Security Commission.
Since the 1986 explosion, 31 workers and firefighters have been killed, mainly due to their exposure to very high levels of radioactivity. Thousands more died of accident-related illnesses in the following years. The total number of deaths and the long-term effects on health remain the subject of intense debate to this day.
The current Ukrainian government denounces the Soviet Union’s handling of the disaster and its cover-up efforts. The order to evacuate the area was given 36 hours after the explosion.
“The 35th anniversary of the Chernobyl tragedy is a reminder of how state misinformation, such as that promoted the totalitarian Soviet regime, has led to the greatest man-made disaster in human history,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
