Ukraine: Spain removes its ambassador from the country

Spain announced this morning that it had removed its ambassador from Kiev, as well as its remaining diplomatic staff, as well as about 100 Spanish citizens who were in Ukraine, due to the advance of Russian troops on the Ukrainian capital.

“The last members of the Spanish embassy staff have begun to leave the city” along with Ambassador Sylvia Cortes, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said in an interview with Antena 3 and Cope radio.

They were evacuated “in a convoy of about 100 Spanish nationals who were forced to flee Kiev due to the deteriorating security situation,” he added.

About 100 Spaniards remain in Ukraine. According to the ministry, so far they have not expressed a desire to leave the country. Most of them have dual citizenship.

This Russian invasion “will not be without consequences”, Albares assured, reiterating Spain’s support for Ukraine.

“What is clear is that (Russian President Vladimir Putin) wants to review the foundations of the European edifice and” respect for the integrity of the borders, “but” we will do everything we can to defend this order, “he said. .
