Ukraine starts recruiting reservists aged 18-60, parliament votes on gun law

Ukraine began on Wednesday (23) to recruit reservists aged between 18 and 60 years after a decree by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the Armed Forces said in a statement. The maximum period of service is one year.

Zelenskiy said on Tuesday he was introducing reservist recruitment, but ruled out a general mobilization after Russia announced it was moving troops to eastern Ukraine.

Also on Wednesday (23), the Ukrainian parliament voted to pass, in first reading, a bill that gives permission for Ukrainians to carry firearms and act in self-defense.

“The adoption of this law is entirely in the interests of the state and society,” the draft bill’s authors said in a note, adding that the law was necessary because of the “existing threats and dangers for the citizens of Ukraine.”

One of Europe’s worst security crises in decades came after Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized two areas of eastern Ukraine as independent and ordered troops to be deployed to eastern Ukraine.

internal sanctions

Ukraine’s parliament on Wednesday approved a package of sanctions against 351 Russians – including lawmakers who supported recognizing the independence of two separatist-controlled territories in eastern Ukraine and sending Russian troops there.

The sanctions impose restrictions, which include preventing those sanctioned from entering Ukraine and preventing their access to assets, capital, property and business licenses.

Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council is expected to impose the sanctions after a vote.

understand the conflict

After months of military escalation and intemperance on the Ukrainian border, Russia is increasing pressure on its former Soviet neighbor, threatening to destabilize Europe and involve the United States.

Russia has been tightening its military grip around Ukraine for the past year, amassing tens of thousands of troops, equipment and artillery at the country’s gates. The mobilization prompted warnings from US intelligence officials that a Russian invasion could be imminent.

In recent weeks, diplomatic efforts to defuse tensions have not come to a conclusion. The independence of Donetsk and Luhansk, two Ukrainian separatist areas, was recognized by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday (21).

The escalation in the years-long conflict between Russia and Ukraine has set off the continent’s biggest security crisis since the Cold War, raising the specter of a dangerous confrontation between Western powers and Moscow.
