Ukraine targets western Russia with drones, Russian officials say

Ukraine launched a series of drone strikes overnight, targeting several regions in western Russia, local governors said on Wednesday (18) local time. There were no reports of damage or casualties.

Seven Ukrainian drones were destroyed over the western Smolensk region, Vasily Anokhin, governor of the region bordering Belarus, said on the Telegram messaging app.

Russia’s air defense unit destroyed a drone over the Oryol region, Governor Andrei Klychkov said on Telegram.

At least 14 Ukrainian attack drones were destroyed over the Bryansk region, Alexander Bogomaz, governor of the region bordering Ukraine, reported on Telegram.

Kiev says the strikes targeted Russia’s military, energy and transport infrastructure, which is crucial to Moscow’s war efforts.

Russian authorities rarely disclose the full extent of the damage caused by Ukrainian strikes.

As Ukraine has increased domestic drone production over the past two years, it has also stepped up attacks on Russian territory.

Ukraine’s biggest drone attack, which targeted the Russian capital in September, killed at least one person, destroyed homes and caused flight disruptions at Moscow airports.
