The pediatric oncology department of the hospital in Lviv (L’viv), Ukraine, is fully booked. Children with cancer cannot be transported elsewhere, to a safer area, because their conditions do not allow it.
This was explained by Roman Kizyma, pediatric oncologist and referent of the Soleterre Foundation (an NGO that provides treatment and medical assistance all over the world) of the hospital, who broadcast a clip with his desperate appeal: “Dear friends, I am Roman Kizyma, I am the head of the pediatric oncology and transplantation department at the hospital in L’viv. We are having huge problems due to the constant threats of aerial bombardments ».
It’s still: “Children with cancer must be evacuated immediately in the bunkers. But it is difficult for us to do this because we have patients from different cities in Ukraine such as Kharkiv, Dnipro and Kiev. We will run out of drugs and medical equipment in the next months. We need everyone’s help to stop the Russian invasion and this war that is killing the children and people of our country ».
In Kiev, hospitals have blocked interventions, even the most urgent ones, and urgent treatments such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy have also been interrupted, as explained Damiano Rizzi, president of Soleterre. Some of the staff did not show up for work. “Everyone is trying to secure families. This prevents interventions as well as radiotherapy and chemotherapy. These are patients who are at risk of dying. War does not stop tumors“.
