THE President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyhas put forward a plan to convert them to Ukrainian army in professional. The end of the military service of the citizens and the recruitment of 100,000 soldiers is foreseen, within three years.
The Ukrainian army was in a state of disarray eight years ago. It has since been modernized with the help of Westerners since 2014 and its annexation Crimea from the Russia as well as the conflict with the separatists in eastern Ukraine. The clashes have killed at least 13,000 people and have not stopped despite peace agreements.
Before Parliament, the president signed a decree providing for the increase of army personnel by 100,000 over three years, in addition to the nearly 250,000 existing military, with the creation of 20 new brigades.
