Ukraine: The plan to turn the army into a professional one

THE President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyhas put forward a plan to convert them to Ukrainian army in professional. The end of the military service of the citizens and the recruitment of 100,000 soldiers is foreseen, within three years.

The Ukrainian army was in a state of disarray eight years ago. It has since been modernized with the help of Westerners since 2014 and its annexation Crimea from the Russia as well as the conflict with the separatists in eastern Ukraine. The clashes have killed at least 13,000 people and have not stopped despite peace agreements.

Before Parliament, the president signed a decree providing for the increase of army personnel by 100,000 over three years, in addition to the nearly 250,000 existing military, with the creation of 20 new brigades. The decree also provides for salary increases and greater benefits for the military, their relatives and former fighters.

Ratifies the principle of transition to a professional army, with the president urging the government to work to end military service by 2024. Zelenskyhowever, stressed that this plan was not prepared against the background of the crisis that prevails with Russia.

Westerners accuse Russians of gathering more than 100,000 troops on the border with Ukraine possibly preparing an invasion. THE Moscow denies that it has any belligerent disposition, but any de-escalation depends on guarantees of its security, in particular Ukraine will never become a member NATO and how the North Atlantic Alliance will withdraw its forces to the positions it was in 1997.

In 2014, the Ukrainian army, underfunded, with outdated equipment and unprepared, experienced humiliation leaving the Russia to understand her Crimea without a fight, reports the APE BPE and then retreating towards the pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine and leaving battalions of volunteers in the front line.

It has since benefited from Western aid, which has grown amid fears of a Russian invasion, mainly through the purchase of non-Turkish drones or the delivery of British anti-tank missiles.

Recently, Ukraine received another 84 tons of American ammunition, bringing the receipts to 500 tons in the last days.
