Ukraine: The Prosecutor General’s Office announced the death of another 24 children in Mariupol

The Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office said today that it had learned of the deaths of another 24 children in Mariupol, the port in the southeastern part of the country that had been under siege for weeks before it was captured by Russian forces in mid-May.

In all, the attorney general’s office said at least 287 children had died since the Russian-led invasion of Ukraine began on February 24. At least 492 have been injured.

“During the recording of criminal offenses, it became known that another 24 children died in Mariupol, in the Donetsk region, due to indiscriminate bombings by the Russian army,” the Attorney General’s Office said in a post in the Telegram messaging application. “The evidence is not final, as work continues to be verified at active combat points, in temporarily occupied and liberated territories.”

Reuters was unable to confirm the report from an independent source.

The mayor of Mariupol – which has been destroyed due to the siege – said that cholera has broken out in the city as the sewerage network is not working and the corpses are decomposing in the streets.

Russia has denied that it was targeting civilians and denies allegations of war crimes in what it calls a “special military operation” aimed at demilitarizing and “de-Naziizing” Ukraine.

Earlier in June, the United Nations said more than 250 children had been killed since the start of the war and five million were still at risk.
