The French counter-terrorism prosecutor’s office has announced the launch of three new war crimes investigations into Ukraine in connection with the crackdown on French civilians in the country, which has been facing an invasion of Russia since February 24.

In a statement, the prosecutor said he was investigating possible war crimes in the cities of Mariupol, Gostomel and Chernihiv between February 24 and March 16.

“War crimes may be defined as deliberate attacks on physical integrity, deliberate attacks on civilians who did not take part in hostilities, deliberate deprivations necessary for the survival of civilian property and / or deliberate attacks on non-military property, theft and destruction.” , explains the French anti-terrorism prosecutor.

The investigation was commissioned by the Central Office for Crimes Against Humanity, Genocide and War Crimes (OCLCH).

French justice can not open investigations into crimes committed outside French territory, unless one of the victims has French citizenship, if the perpetrator is French or whose permanent residence is on French soil.

The prosecutor’s office has already launched an investigation into the death of Pierre Zakrevsky, a French-Irish journalist, on March 14 on the outskirts of Kiev.

For his part, Oleksiy Arestovich, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said war crimes committed during the war in Ukraine, such as the massacre in the city of Butsa, should be tried in a special criminal court before the of the International Criminal Court that tried war crimes in the former Yugoslavia.
