Ukraine to NATO: ‘Prepare sanctions to prevent a Russian attack’

Ukraine on Wednesday called on NATO to prepare economic sanctions against Russia and boost military co-operation with Kiev as the country joined the North Atlantic Alliance for talks on how to prevent Russia from launching a new offensive after “unusually large” concentration of troops near its borders.

“We will call on the allies to join Ukraine in drawing up a deterrent package of sanctions,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba told reporters as he arrived for talks with his NATO counterparts in Riga.

Under the package, NATO should prepare economic sanctions against Russia if it “decides to choose the worst-case scenario,” he said, adding that it should also strengthen military and defense co-operation with Ukraine.

On Tuesday, NATO and the United States warned Moscow that it would pay a high price for any new military action against Ukraine.

“Any future Russian attack on Ukraine will have a high price and serious political and economic consequences for Russia,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters after the first day of talks between the 30 allies in Riga.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has argued that Russia would be forced to act if US-led NATO deployed missiles in Ukraine that could strike Moscow within minutes.

In a press conference later in the day, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is expected to elaborate on Washington’s information on Russia’s intentions in Ukraine.
