A Turkish merchant ship sailed from the Ukrainian port of Mariupol today following talks between Turkish and Russian delegations in Moscow over cereals blocked in Ukraine due to a Russian military strike, the Turkish Defense Ministry said.
“Only a few hours after the end of the long meeting, the Turkish truck (Azov Concord), which had been waiting for days, departed from the Ukrainian port,” the ministry said in a statement.
It is “the first foreign ship to depart from the Ukrainian port of Mariupol”, which fell to the Russians in May, the statement added.
A quadripartite meeting, with representatives of the United Nations, Russia and Ukraine, will take place in the “coming weeks” in Turkey to organize the transportation of grain across the Black Sea, Ankara said.
The Russian Defense Ministry also announced that Russia and Turkey have agreed to continue discussing the creation of a safe passage through the Black Sea for the export of grain from Ukraine.
On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said “difficult negotiations” were under way to lift the blockade of Ukrainian ports, from which millions of tonnes of grain could not be exported at the moment.
Without reaching an agreement so far, the UN has been negotiating for weeks with Moscow, Kyiv and Ankara an agreement that would allow cereals to leave Ukraine safely, as well as return to the international market the fertilizers produced by Russia.
A possible deal would lower food prices and ease the world food crisis, which is being exacerbated by the Russian invasion.
