Ukraine: Two British NGO volunteers arrested by Russian forces

Two British volunteers working for humanitarian aid in Ukraine have been arrested by the Russian military, according to the organization they worked for.

The non-governmental organization “Presidium Network” announced that the two men were arrested on Monday by Russian forces at a checkpoint south of Zaporizhia, in southern Ukraine.

There was no immediate comment from the British Foreign Office.

“The Foreign Office is doing everything it can to support and identify these two people,” Commerce Secretary Anne-Marie Trivelian told Sky News.

According to the NGO, the men – both civilians – were working under the Joint Humanitarian Operations Center initiative, which provided food and medical supplies to trapped Ukrainians and helped evacuate areas of Ukraine.

The British government confirmed yesterday that a British national had been killed and another was missing in Ukraine, with media reports saying the dead man was a British army veteran believed to be fighting alongside Ukrainian forces.
