Two people have been killed in Russian bombings in Kyiv today, targeting a residential building and the Antonov aircraft factory, the Ukrainian capital’s city hall said today.
“Rocket fragments fell on the road in the Kourenifka area, in the western part of the capital,” causing one death and six injuries, “the city council told the Telegram.
Ukrainian authorities have previously spoken of the death of a man in an air raid on a residential building in Kyiv.
At least 70 people have been evacuated from a building in the Obolon district of northern Kiev, the capital’s municipality has said.
The Russian military also bombed the Antonov aircraft factory in the Sviatokhin district in the western part of the capital, the city council said, without specifying whether the plant was damaged.
On February 27, the Russian military destroyed the only prototype of the “Mriya” aircraft, the largest in the world built by Antonov, during battles that took place at Gostomel Airport, near Kyiv, a scene of heavy fighting.
That aircraft, the An-225, unique in the world, 84 meters long with a payload capacity of about 250 tons and a speed that could reach 850 kilometers per hour, was christened “Mriya”, which means “Dream” in Ukrainian.
Originally built under Soviet aeronautical programs, mainly for the Bourane space shuttle, the An-225 made its maiden flight in 1988.
After many years of inactivity due to lack of resources after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the only model had made a test flight in 2011 to Gostomel, about 20 km northwest of Kiev.
Since then, it has been operated by the Ukrainian company Antonov Airlines.
That aircraft played a key role in the distribution of masks around the world during the Covid-19 crisis and regularly served NATO and oil companies to transport large volumes of cargo.
