Ukraine: Two TV channels affiliated with the pro-Russian opposition outlawed

A lock on two opposition TV channels was imposed by an executive decree of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.

Specifically, the decision concerns Ukrlive.tv and the Perviy Nezavisimiy. The pro-Russian faction “Opposition Coalition for Life” condemned the president’s decision, which he described as a blow to press freedom. The Member Nestor Suffritz, belonging to that faction, is said to be the co-owner of the television stations. He said he would appeal to the head of state against this decision. The measure imposed by Volodymyr Zelensky has five-year validity.

In February, the president, whose popularity is extremely low at the moment, banned the operation of three other opposition television stations, despite the strong criticism it provoked. They were also considered propaganda tools of the Coalition, which has its political base in the eastern and southern part of the country, according to the APE-MPE. In August, access to the opposition website strana.ua was blocked.

In another decree, President Zelensky announced that action would be taken to counter “false information” spread by Russia.

The current government in Kiev considers that it is at war with Moscow. In recent weeks, the concentration of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine caused great concern in the West. Ukraine-Russia relations collapsed in 2014, after Russia annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, which Kiev demands to be returned. Some 14,000 people have been killed in the fighting, which erupted shortly afterwards between pro-Russian separatists and the Ukrainian army in eastern Ukraine, according to Ukrainian authorities.
