Ukraine: UN calls for 100,000 children to be protected and evacuated from war zones

Nearly 100,000 children in Ukraine, half of whom are disabled, live in institutions or boarding schools, and it is crucial that all steps are taken to relocate them to other countries to escape the Russian invasion, according to the UN.

UNHCR and the head of Unicef have joined forces to warn that an evacuation without proper action could end badly, leaving these children in the hands of predators and traffickers.

“We have information that the institutions seek to send children to the security of neighboring countries or beyond,” Philippe Grady and Kathryn Russell wrote in a joint statement. Recognizing that evacuation can save lives “, they emphasize that” permission must be given by the parents or guardians “of the minor.

“Under no circumstances should families be separated due to relocation or evacuation,” they said.

Those in charge of these children in the institutions where they live should ensure that the Ukrainian authorities are informed, as are the authorities in the host country. If possible, children should have their IDs and medical records with them.

The UN emphasizes that adoptions should not be allowed, even if the families hosting the children can provide them with “critical protection”.

“We must make every effort to reunite the children with their families, as long as this is in the best interests of the child,” the two officials said.
