The United Nations warns that the Russian invasion of Ukraine could lead to the exodus of up to ten million more refugees.
Some 4 million people are likely to flee to neighboring countries to escape hostilities, said UN envoy Stephen Duzarric in New York, adding that this was just an initial estimate.
It is not clear how many have been displaced inside and outside the country, according to the Agency. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Philippe Grady, more than a million people have already fled Ukraine within a week of the outbreak of the war.
Official figures indicate that most, some 575,000 Ukrainians, fled to Poland. Germany has welcomed some 5,000 Ukrainian refugees so far, according to the Federal Ministry of the Interior.
