Ukraine: UNHCR receives record contributions from private sector aid

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced Monday that the private sector has contributed a record $ 200 million to help Ukrainians following the Russian military invasion on February 24.

“In just over two weeks, companies, foundations and philanthropists have contributed more than $ 200 million to the UNHCR response to the crisis in Ukraine,” the United Nations said in a press release.

According to the UNHCR, more than 2.8 million people have fled Ukraine since the Russian invasion, and at least another 2 million have been internally displaced.

The UNHCR “fears that millions more will be displaced if the war continues.”

The agency had called for $ 510 million to be raised to provide emergency assistance to internally displaced persons and refugees, warning that the amount needed for the aid “would no doubt increase”.

UNHCR has received most of this funding from governments, but has hailed the private sector as “expressing its generosity and solidarity with direct contributions”.

These donations allowed the UNHCR to respond quickly after the war broke out, in particular by arranging for the distribution of aid by air and road.

“I want to thank the companies, institutions and philanthropists around the world for their kindness and generosity in helping people who have fled the war in Ukraine,” said the head of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Filippo Grady.

“Millions (of people) are in desperate need of urgent help. As the crisis deepens, I call on the private sector to continue its contribution,” he added.

About 1.8 million Ukrainian refugees have taken refuge in Poland, Warsaw announced yesterday. At least 29,600 people crossed the 500-kilometer-long border on Monday alone, bringing the total to 1.77 million, according to the Polish border guard.

There are currently no official figures on how many remain in Poland and how many have moved to other EU member states, but nearly 147,000 (exactly 146,998) had arrived in Germany as early as yesterday morning, according to the federal interior ministry in Berlin. The actual number is likely to be higher, as the ministry data only concerns refugees whose presence has been recorded by the federal police.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, about 250,000 Ukrainians have crossed into the territory of the Russian Federation since the beginning of the invasion, which Moscow calls a “special military operation.” Among them are 55,000 children, according to Lt. Gen. Mikhail Mizinchev, whose statements were broadcast by the Russian news agency TASS. According to the officer, 8,575 civilians, including 1,292 children, fled to Russia in the previous 48 hours. They left both territories controlled by pro-Russian separatists in Donbas and other parts of Ukraine.

The numbers given by the Russian lieutenant general are impossible to verify independently.
